Search & AI visibility

SEO, AEO and GEO: what your business needs

By Benchmark Enterprise Systems, LLC · Updated

The direct answer

SEO helps people discover your website through search. AEO focuses on useful answers, and GEO describes visibility in generated AI responses. These goals overlap. Start with accurate information, accessible pages and useful explanations; no provider can guarantee that a search engine or AI service will feature your business.

Three labels, one practical starting point

A search result, an answer box and an AI response are different experiences. A business may want visibility in all three. For Google Search, Google's guidance treats generative AI optimization as part of SEO. That guidance applies to Google; each other service has its own systems and access requirements.

At Benchmark, the first question is whether customers and search systems can find the right business information. A blocked service page or a location with the wrong phone number deserves attention before a campaign built around a new acronym.

What to ask a provider to demonstrate

Ask which pages were checked, what evidence showed a problem, and what changed. A useful report identifies the affected URL, the observed condition and a practical next action. Separate a verified repair from a hoped-for visibility improvement.

  • Can important pages be reached, crawled and considered for indexing?
  • Do business identity, services and contact details agree?
  • Does the content answer a real buying question with a clear next step?
  • Is progress measured through available search and inquiry data?

Avoid buying an acronym instead of a result

A fixed answer length, special file or mass-produced page is not a substitute for a useful website. Google does not require an ideal page length or special AI markup for its search features. That does not mean every tool is useless; it means the provider should explain what it does and how success will be checked.
