VCT is manufactured from vinyl resins, limestone or mineral fillers, pigments, and other ingredients formed into modular tiles. It is valued for its relatively low initial material cost, replaceability, established maintenance systems, and availability in many colors. Patterns can be created by combining multiple tile colors. Traditional VCT normally requires an ongoing floor-finish program to protect the surface and maintain appearance. Initial finishing, routine cleaning, periodic burnishing, and eventual stripping and refinishing can significantly affect lifecycle cost. The substrate must be smooth because irregularities can telegraph through the tile. Adhesive, tile conditioning, layout, rolling, and waiting periods must follow manufacturer instructions.
