Commercial carpet tile is a layered flooring product. Its backing helps hold the yarn in place, stabilizes the tile, and influences how the product responds to temperature, moisture, rolling traffic, and repeated maintenance. Backing systems may use vinyl, thermoplastic, polyurethane, bitumen, recycled composite materials, or manufacturer-specific constructions. Some are designed primarily for dimensional stability, while others provide additional cushion, acoustic absorption, moisture resistance, or comfort. The backing must also be compatible with the adhesive or installation system. An incorrect adhesive, inadequate substrate preparation, or unsuitable environmental conditions can cause curling, movement, edge lifting, or bond failure. Backing selection should be based on expected traffic, moisture conditions, furniture and equipment, acoustic goals, replacement needs, and the flooring manufacturer's complete system requirements.
