Carpet tiles are manufactured with a directional orientation that is usually identified by arrows on the backing. The manufacturer specifies which layouts are approved for each product. A monolithic installation places every tile in the same direction to create a more continuous appearance. Quarter-turn rotates adjoining tiles by 90 degrees. Ashlar offsets the tiles lengthwise, while brick installation offsets them across the width. Some products are intentionally designed for random placement. Pattern choice can affect visible seams, color movement, traffic flow, waste, and the overall character of the room. A product intended for quarter-turn installation may not look uniform when installed monolithically. The selected layout should be confirmed before installation, demonstrated with a dry layout when appropriate, and followed consistently throughout the project.
