The bevels on luxury vinyl planks are the most vulnerable points of the product's wear layer. Chipping typically occurs when the locking mechanism of the plank is subjected to extreme pressure or when the floor is not supported properly from beneath. If the substrate is uneven or has low spots, the planks are forced to bridge those gaps, which puts immense stress on the joints as people walk across the area. Over time, this constant flexing and micro-movement can cause the brittle edges of the bevel to fatigue and chip. Additionally, heavy impacts—such as dropping a heavy object or dragging furniture across the floor—can snap the edge of the bevel if it is unsupported. Improper installation tools are another frequent cause of edge damage. Some installers may use a hammer or a mallet directly against the tongue or groove to force a fit, which can shatter the vinyl edge before the floor is even fully installed. Using an approved tapping block is essential to distribute the force of impact evenly across the locking system without striking the delicate bevel surface. Furthermore, if a locking joint is not fully engaged, the exposed edge remains higher than the adjacent plank, making it a target for shoes, furniture wheels, and other traffic that will inevitably chip the unprotected surface. Proper substrate leveling and the correct use of installation blocks are the primary defenses against bevel damage.
