Floating luxury vinyl may contract when exposed to low temperatures or separate when locking joints are damaged or not fully engaged. Long runs, restricted movement, and uneven substrates can place additional stress on the connections. Glue-down planks may gap when adhesive coverage is insufficient, the adhesive dries before placement, the substrate is contaminated, or traffic reaches the floor before the bond develops. The gap pattern can help identify the cause. Random isolated gaps may involve damaged joints, while widespread movement may indicate environmental or installation problems. Pushing the planks together without correcting the cause may only move the gap to another location.
