Oiling is optional and is used mainly to darken the stone and create a more uniform patina.
Soapstone does not require oil to prevent ordinary liquid absorption. Untreated soapstone darkens gradually through use, while mineral oil accelerates the appearance. The oil eventually evaporates or wears away and may need reapplication if a uniform dark color is desired. Soapstone-specific wax can provide a longer-lasting alternative depending on the product.
