Concrete, gypsum, wood, old adhesive residue, and other substrates absorb moisture differently. Without the correct primer, water may be pulled from patch or leveler too quickly, reducing flow and strength. Air released from porous concrete can also create bubbles or pinholes. Primer helps create a consistent interface between the substrate and preparation material. Some systems require different primers for porous, nonporous, metal, wood, or contaminated surfaces. Primer is not a substitute for cleaning or mechanical preparation. Dust, curing compounds, oil, weak concrete, and incompatible coatings must still be addressed.
Key considerations
- floor primer before self leveler, primer before floor patch, commercial flooring substrate primer
- floor primer, self-leveling underlayment, floor patch
- bond strength, controlled absorption, preparation reliability
- substrate sealing, improved flow, system compatibility
