Some commercial carpets use backing systems designed to limit liquid penetration, improve dimensional stability, or reduce the opportunity for spills to reach the substrate. These products may be helpful in healthcare, education, hospitality, senior living, and other spaces where spills occur regularly. The backing may also support more effective spot cleaning when contamination remains near the surface. Moisture-resistant backing is not the same as a complete waterproofing system. Seams, perimeter edges, penetrations, damaged tiles, adhesive, and the substrate can still be affected by liquid. The backing also does not protect an installation from moisture vapor moving upward through a concrete slab. Concrete testing and substrate requirements remain separate installation considerations.
