Face weight measures the weight of the visible yarn or pile in a carpet. It does not normally include the primary backing, secondary backing, cushion, or other components. A higher face weight can indicate that more fiber is present, but two carpets with the same face weight may perform very differently. Fiber type, density, twist, pile height, tufting gauge, backing construction, pattern, and overall carpet engineering also affect appearance retention and wear. A tall, loosely constructed carpet can have a relatively high face weight while performing less effectively under traffic than a denser, lower-profile carpet. Commercial carpet should therefore be evaluated using the manufacturer's intended-use classification, performance testing, warranty conditions, construction data, and the actual needs of the facility rather than face weight alone.
Key considerations
- commercial carpet face weight, what carpet face weight means, carpet ounces per square yard
- commercial carpet, carpet face weight, carpet specifications
- appearance retention, durability, traffic performance
- fiber quantity, pile construction, specification comparison
