Pilling occurs when loose fibers become tangled into small balls on the carpet surface.
Abrasion from traffic or cleaning loosens fiber ends. The fibers twist together instead of separating and being removed. Pilling may be more visible in certain staple-fiber carpets and blends. Professional shearing or careful removal can improve appearance, but pulling pills may damage the yarn.
