Marble is valued for distinctive veining and a classic appearance. It is softer and more chemically sensitive than granite or quartzite. Acidic foods such as citrus, vinegar, wine, and tomatoes can dull the finish through etching. Sealer may slow staining but does not prevent etching. Some homeowners appreciate the aged appearance that develops over time. Others may find normal wear unacceptable. A honed finish can make etching less reflective, but it does not eliminate the chemical reaction.
