Commercial kitchens, showers, locker rooms, food-processing areas, and service spaces may require floors that drain reliably. Slope must be coordinated with the drain location, tile size, flooring system, transitions, equipment, doorways, and accessibility requirements. Large-format tile can be difficult to conform to a floor sloping in multiple directions. Smaller tile or specially planned cuts may be needed around point drains. Flooring cannot compensate for a poorly designed or constructed substrate. Drain height, waterproofing, mortar beds, resinous systems, grout, movement joints, and perimeter details must be coordinated before finish installation.
Key considerations
- commercial floor slope to drain, flooring around floor drains, wet area floor installation
- floor drains, commercial tile, resinous flooring, safety flooring
- drainage, slip resistance, cleanability
- positive slope, coordinated drains, wet-area detailing
