Edge curling occurs when the primary backing or face fibers of a carpet tile shrink or expand differently than the secondary backing. This dimensional instability is often triggered by changes in ambient humidity, temperature extremes, or inadequate ventilation during installation. Once an edge begins to curl, it loses contact with the subfloor and the adjacent tile. This exposes the edge to increased mechanical wear, accelerates fiber fraying, and renders the installation unsafe. Ensuring proper acclimation and the use of the manufacturer-specified adhesive system is essential to preventing curling in modular flooring products.
