Traditional VCT is porous enough that an unprotected surface can become difficult to clean and may absorb staining materials. After installation and the required adhesive-curing period, the floor is normally cleaned and coated with compatible commercial floor finish. Multiple thin coats may be applied according to the maintenance system. Routine dust control, damp cleaning, spray buffing, burnishing, recoating, and periodic stripping are used to maintain the finish. The exact program depends on traffic, facility type, desired gloss, equipment, and finish chemistry. Using incompatible products or allowing the finish to wear completely away can expose the tile and create uneven appearance. Maintenance costs should therefore be included when comparing VCT with lower-maintenance flooring options.

Key considerations

  • why VCT needs floor finish, commercial VCT maintenance, VCT wax and finish
  • VCT, floor finish, commercial resilient flooring
  • surface protection, cleanability, appearance retention
  • renewable finish layer, burnishable surface, maintenance system
