Commercial broadloom is manufactured in rolls with limited widths. Large rooms and corridors often require multiple pieces joined together. A properly constructed seam should be secure and appropriately positioned, but it may still be visible under certain lighting or viewing angles. Side lighting, highly uniform carpet, low pile, patterned products, or opposing pile direction can emphasize seam lines. Patterned carpet requires accurate matching, and some designs naturally create more visible transitions. Seams placed across concentrated traffic or near turning points may also receive greater stress. A seam diagram should be planned before material is cut. Roll direction, pattern repeat, room dimensions, doorways, furniture, lighting, and traffic flow should all be considered.

- planned seam layout, pattern matching, directional installation
