The barrier is commonly applied to the upper surface of the pad. It may keep a small spill near the carpet backing long enough for extraction. Liquid can still reach the subfloor at seams, edges, tack strip, vents, and walls. A barrier may also trap moisture above it if cleaning extraction is inadequate. The pad should be approved by the carpet manufacturer and installed with properly treated seams when required.
