Spreading adhesive on the substrate does not guarantee that enough adhesive has contacted the flooring. Installers verify transfer by periodically lifting a newly placed tile, plank, or sheet and examining the adhesive ridges on the substrate and flooring back. The expected transfer depends on the product and adhesive system. Poor transfer can result from the wrong trowel, excessive open time, uneven substrates, curled material, inadequate rolling, contamination, or dried adhesive. Transfer checks should be performed throughout installation because temperature, humidity, substrate porosity, and adhesive condition can change during the work.
