Installing baseboards first allows painting and caulking to be completed before new carpet is placed. The gap between baseboard and subfloor must match the carpet thickness and installation system. If the baseboard is too low, the carpet may not tuck properly. If it is too high, a visible gap may remain. Existing baseboards can usually remain during replacement unless they are damaged or incorrectly positioned.
Key considerations
- baseboard before or after carpet
