Existing adhesive may remain after carpet, resilient flooring, wood, or other materials are removed. Some residue can interfere with patches, primers, moisture systems, and new adhesive. Water-soluble residue may soften when exposed to new wet adhesive, while thick ridges can telegraph through the finished floor. The material should not be aggressively sanded or ground until the possibility of regulated or hazardous content has been evaluated. Older black adhesive, backing, patching, or flooring may require professional testing. Approved removal, scraping, encapsulation, priming, or skim-coating methods depend on the new flooring system and manufacturer instructions.

Key considerations

  • remove old commercial flooring adhesive, flooring over adhesive residue, prepare old glue for new flooring
  • old flooring adhesive, substrate preparation, commercial flooring
  • bond strength, surface compatibility, installation safety
  • residue evaluation, approved encapsulation, controlled removal
