Old carpet may contain soil, allergens, pet contamination, moisture, and damaged backing. Installing over it can create excessive softness, poor stretching, unstable seams, and door-clearance problems. The original carpet also prevents proper inspection of the subfloor and tack strip. Existing flooring should normally be removed so the new carpet and approved cushion can be installed correctly.

Key considerations

  • install carpet over old carpet
  • carpet on carpet
  • remove existing carpet first
